Happy Friday and a Cards for Kate update

Hi everyone! Happy Friday to you!

I hope you all are having a great week! I’m ready for the weekend!
Just wanted to post a little update today about the Cards for Kate card drive.
If you haven’t heard about it yet, you can find out more information HERE on my blog, HERE on my sweet friend Jennifer’s blog – she’s also having a great giveaway today – check it out – or even HERE today on the A Million Little Things blog. Cards are pouring in and we are so thankful and grateful to all who have taken some time out of their day to make a card or two or five! Thank you so much to all of you who have created something for Kate and her family. If you haven’t yet, we’d love for you to be a part of this really special card drive.

Here’s another reason to participate, especially if you have children. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Here are some statistics:

* Each school day, 46 children are diagnosed with cancer.
* One in 330 children will develop cancer by age 20.
* Each year in the U.S. over 12,600 children are diagnosed with cancer.
* Although the 5 year survival rate is steadily increasing, one quarter of children diagnosed with cancer will die 5 years from the time of diagnosis.
* Cancer remains the number one disease killer of America’s children – more than Cystic Fibrosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Asthma and AIDS combined.
* 80% of children have metastatic disease at time of diagnosis as compared to only 20% of adults.
* There are currently more than 270,000 childhood cancer survivors in the U.S.
* Late effects of childhood cancer treatment are common in survivors, and approximately one-third are moderate to severe.

Those statistics are very scary. Chances are if you or your family hasn’t been directly affected by cancer, you know someone who has been. Please take a bit of your day today or during this holiday weekend to make a card for this card drive. You’ll be glad you did. I promise. We can all do a little something to help.

I wanted to share with you the cards that I created for the card drive.
And my favorite card of all isn’t one that I created, it is one that my daughter Caylin created. It touched me so much watching her create her card and hearing the things she said. Multiple times she said, “I’m going to put this smiley in here to make Kate smile” or “I think Kate would like a butterfly and a flower.” Just sweet things that really warmed my heart. She put a lot of time and effort into her card. She wanted it just perfect and I know Kate will love it and it will make her smile. :-D Here’s the outside of her card:
As you can see – she really went to town with my scrapbooking and card making goodies. LOL!
Here’s the sweet inside of her card:
Aren’t those smiles she makes the cutest? Sigh. Love them! I was so happy to spend not only some fun, quality time with my daughter creating, but knowing that what we were doing together would touch the life of someone else made it that much more special and meaningful. It makes for a great time for sure. :-D Won’t you join us? :-D

I think it's wonderful what everyone is doing. Might I suggest something? Don't give the cards to them all at once. Space it out. As a mom of a little girl who went through cancer, getting that little pick me up can make all the difference in the world. Both for the parents and the child AND the sibblings. It's a tough road and there are many days when you feel like you've come against a brick wall. Then you read the comments on the caringbridge site. Or you get a card. Or email and seems that you can keep moving. You get that second wind that helps you.
