Type 1 Tuesday : “The Diabetes Drawer”

This is what we call the “diabetes drawer.” Every household that has someone with Type 1 definitely has a drawer, cabinet or shelf designated for diabetes supplies. From alcohol swabs, strips, syringes, glucose gabs, reading material and extra meters – this drawer is always full.

Oh my goodness it is overwhelming just looking at this. I had no idea.

Yep, it can be overwhelming, Jana. The good thing though is that we can just close this drawer and not have to look at it all day. :) We’re stocked on what we need and it’s good to know that, but I don’t want to see it all day. ;)

I have one of those, only mine is a plastic pull out drawer and my friends are always a little shocked when they see all that is needed just to make it through the day while I’m pregnant. Since I am type 2, I’m only on insulin, so far, when pregnant so I’m really sorry this kind of drawer has a permanent place in your home.

What..no glucagon?? :) Since my daughter pumps now we have 2 drawers with supplies. One of the normal Syringes, alcohol, test strips, and the other with the pump sites, tegaderm and things like that. It’s crazy how much is in there. While at work the other day (I am a field claims adjuster) I was asked what 5 things besides my kids I would grab. The first two things were 1. The insulin from the fridge (there’s probably 6 months worth!) and 2. The drawers of insulin supplies. Between those two things that is probably $5000 worth of supplies/insulin. And I couldn’t imagine having to rush around in an emergency trying to replace those things. In case your wondering the 3rd item would be my laptop bag w/ my external hard drive (I have thousands of photos on the external and would hate to lose it) and #4 would be my children’s memory books and #5 would be my oldest daughters guitar that she loves.
