There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to Type 1 Diabetes. This is one I hear a lot: “Can she eat that?”
Caylin (and anyone with Type 1) can eat whatever they’d like – they just have to have the insulin to cover it.Right now Caylin is given an injection of insulin to cover her meals before she eats. The amount of insulin she receives is decided by the amount of CARBS that are in each meal.
Sure eating cookies and cake and ice cream all day isn’t good for someone with Type 1, but it’s not good for ANYONE. Anything is ok in moderation and with the proper insulin. So the next time you see a child with type 1 eating a cookie or a cupcake at a birthday party or wherever – you can relax. They’re just being a kid. They ARE a kid, after all. :)

October 31, 2012 at 9:35 pmThank you for posting this!!! My sister and nephew both have type 1 and I have type 2 and this is something we hear ALL the time too!! People just don’t understand. I like to tell people that it is just like Weight Watchers….we can eat anything we want, but we have to count our “points” (carbs). :-)
